A cake for a VW specialist, a restorer of beetles and campers. Lots of photos supplied with this one, which helped no end to get the details right. The black beetle was a current project, and the camper in the turquoise and white colours was the gentleman’s pride and joy. The whole cake was set up to be a garage/workshop theme, so a model of his Teng toolbox, a welder and an engine which seems to be causing some trouble!
For a change, I made the camper from Rice Krispie treats – something that if you watch the cake decorating programmes on TV you might be familiar with. I don’t entirely agree with its use in these programmes – sometimes it seems there is more rice krispie than actual cake – but the camper is of the sort of size that to make it all from sugarpaste wouldn’t give such good results and would also be pretty terrible to eat. I found the rice krispies quite nice to work with as it turned out.
